Java Metadata Interface (JMI)

The Java Metadata Interface (JMI) Specificiation implements a dynamic, platform-neutral infrastructure that enables the creation, storage, access, discovery, and exchange of metadata. JMI is based on the Meta Object Facility (MOF) specification from the Object Management Group (OMG), an industry-endorsed standard for metadata management. The MOF standard consists of a set of basic modeling artifacts described using UML. Models of any kind of metadata (called metamodels) can be built up from these basic building blocks. The MOF specification then defines a generic programming mechanism (using IDL) that allows for the discovery, query, access, and manipulation of these metamodel instances, either at design time or runtime.

Java(TM) Boutique - Java MetaData Interface (JMI)

One of the biggest challenges facing corporations today is the integration of data. Machine readable data exists in varying formats on different systems making it difficult for systems to communicate effectively. The JMI Specification provides a common Java API for accessing metadata using MOF standards.

Java Metadata Interface and Data Warehousing, from John Wiley & Sons - Business White Papers, Webcasts and Case Studies - BNET.com

This paper describes a model-driven approach to data warehouse administration by presenting a detailed scenario illustrating how JMI-enabled tools might be used in the realization of a data warehouse schema. Java code fragments illustrating the use of JMI interfaces are provided throughout. One also show how a JMI resource might integrate with the J2EE Connector Architecture.
